Voici une oeuvre qui fourmille de monstres et témoigne de leur humanité. Sur une planète éloignée de la Terre et où ils ont été conduits par Nef, l'ordinateur devenu dieu dans Destination vide, les clones humains se sont adaptés pour survivre sur ce monde hostile et ont utilisé les ressources de leurs sciences, de la génétique en particulier, et ils ont produit, jadis, d'innombrables mutants. Ils ont détruit aussi, dans le temps de leur arrivée, le varech intelligent, Avata, qui peuplait l'océan de la planète.

On y retrouve les interrogations politiques, éthiques et philosophiques chères à Frank Herbert, aiguisées par sa collaboration avec Bill Ransom, qui fut l'un de ses plus proches amis.
