Quentin, un jeune de 18 ans en révolte vis-à-vis de sa famille, des parents Américains middle classe pour qui ne compte que la valorisation sociale et l'argent, est aussi en décalage vis-à-vis de ses camarades car il a des dons magiques. La seule fille qui l'intéresse, Julia, est elle aussi une magicienne potentielle, mais elle sort avec un autre.
Quentin, bercé par ses lectures d'enfance qui avait trait à un monde magique imaginaire, Fillory, tente alors l'exa- men de l'université de Brakebills, située quelque part dans l'état de New York, l'équivalent pour cet âge de l'école des sorciers dans Harry Potter. Il y est reçu. Pas Julia.
Le cursus à Brakebills est atypique dans son contenu et sa méthode : la magie est une école de souffrance, mais c'est aussi un vrai campus où les étudiants ont une vie collec- tive forte, font le fête, boivent et couchent ensemble, et où on reçoit la famille sans que quiconque d'extérieur à la magie se doute de quoique ce soit. Et Grossman nous narre sans doute le moment le plus intense de la vie d'un Américain : l'Université !
La comparaison avec Harry Potter va jusqu'à l'allusion ironique à un championnat international de bourbasse auquel Brakebills participe, mais l'équipe de Quentin perd très vite et l'école dans son ensemble rate même le match de consolation.
Le groupe d'amis de Quentin est constitué de cinq jeunes qui ont des capacités dans le domaine de la magie liée aux éléments (la lumière, le froid, etc.) et qu'on appelle les Physiques. Au sein de ce groupe, Quentin a une liai- son amoureuse avec Alice dont les parents, eux, sont ma- giciens, mais elle n'a pas avec eux de meilleurs rapports que Quentin avec les siens.
Au terme de ces études, les diplômés retourne dans le monde « normal », qui en post-doc dans une universi- té classique, qui en entreprise. Il leur faut juste trouver une position qui leur permet d'utiliser discrètement leurs pouvoirs en donnant juste l'impression qu'ils sont des sur- doués. Sinon ils doivent choisir entre renoncer à la magie ou vivre très isolés socialement.
Quentin et Alice s'installent à NYC en compagnie de leurs amis sortis de l'école un an plus tôt - Josh, Eliot et Janet. Le petit groupe se contente de quelques tours de passe-passe pour avoir de quoi boire et jouer aux cartes nuit et jour. L'ennui est total. Seule l'intrusion de Penny, magicien rebelle qui a quitté Brakebills à la fin de la 4ème année les rejoints, les sort de leur torpeur. Il faut dire qu'il est porteur d'une troublante nouvelle : il a déniché l'en- chantement (un bouton magique) qui leur permettrait d'entrer dans le monde de Fillory et d'y rejoindre leurs héros de papier.
Les six magiciens se rendent à plusieurs reprise dans Fillory, où ils sont finalement entraînés dans une série d'épreuves qui s'avèrent de plus en plus physiques et dan- gereuses, jusqu'à un combat final où Alice les sauvent en allant si loin dans sa capacité de magie qu'elle en perd le contrôle et devient une créature inhumaine, un niffin, quand Quentin, lui, est gravement blessé.
Après avoir été soigné pendant des mois par des centaures guérisseurs, Quentin, bouleversé par la mort d'Alice et décidé à renoncer à la magie, devient employé de bureau à Manhattan, jusqu'à ce que Janet, Eliot et Julia viennent l'en arracher et le persuadent de repartir à Fillory.
