Il y a bien longtemps, dans une galaxie lointaine, très lointaine...
Après avoir été sauvé de l'exil par des soldats impériaux, Thrawn parvient rapidement à capter l'attention de l'Empereur Palpatine par son intelligence impitoyable et son génie tactique. Il ne lui faut pas plus longtemps pour se révéler aussi indispensable qu'ambitieux ; aussi dévoué à l'Empire que le plus loyal de ses serviteurs, Dark Vador ; ainsi qu'un guerrier dont il ne faut pas sous-estimer les talents. Dans toutes ses missions - qu'il s'agisse d'évincer des contrebandiers, de débusquer des espions ou de combattre des pirates -, la victoire est à chaque fois au rendez-vous. Et quand bien même ses méthodes anticonformistes exaspèrent certains de ses supérieurs, elles suscitent toujours davantage d'admiration au sein de l'Empire. Tandis que les promotions se succèdent en parallèle de sa fulgurante ascension de l'échelle du pouvoir, il enseigne à son aide de confiance, le sous-officier Eli Vanto, l'art du combat et du leadership ainsi que tous les secrets permettant de s'assurer la victoire. Toutefois, même si Thrawn domine le champ de bataille, il lui reste beaucoup à apprendre pour l'emporter dans l'arène politique où la redoutable administratrice Arihnda Pryce pourrait se révéler autant une puissante alliée qu'une ennemie impitoyable.
Toutes ces leçons seront mises à rude épreuve lorsque Thrawn deviendra amiral. Il devra faire appel à l'ensemble de ses connaissances, à son instinct et aux forces armées placées sous son commandement pour mater une insurrection qui menace non seulement des vies innocentes, mais également la suprématie de l'Empire sur la galaxie... sans oublier son plan de carrière soigneusement élaboré.
